"Isle A’Vache" is a small Island off the south coast of Haiti. Right across the Island on the mainland Haiti lays the coastal town of Les Cayes, featuring a small harbor, a weekly market and some shops. Isle A'Vache is about 3.5 km long and 1.5 km on its widest spot. The famous hydrographer to the King, Jaques Nicolas Bellin drew this map in 1764 depicting Mad Reef on the top and the harbor (now Port Morgan) on the bottom left. There are several ways to write the Islands name, some call it Cow Island or Ila Vacca, we have adapted to Bellin’s way of writing.

The Island consists of several villages strewn into the hilly terrain and along some incredible white sand beaches. There is no industry of any kind and only a very few people have a real job. Most of the 9000 locals know poverty to the bone and virtually live from hand to mouth. |

There is a Jesuit Mission on the Island headed by "Rev. John Henault". He has dedicated his life to help the poor. His work and dedication has been crucial in reducing typhus and malaria to a manageable level and he runs a project whereby he is drilling for water and organizes cisterns to be built. "Madame Bernard", the name of the village next to Ka-koc, has a school and an orphanage housing 52 most mentally disabled children who really do need help. |

On our visits to Isle A’Vache we have met many locals and made good friends over the years. Some of them have become very dear to us like "Wagner", "Phelix" and "Levine" (from left below). Wagner has become our trusted friend, guide and local translator; he knows and is related to almost everyone on the island and he has diplomatically resolved several “cultural mishaps” on our behalf.
