Theodore Roosevelt has been leading Americans to fight the Spanish in Cuba and in Puerto Rico. In 1898, during the last year of the Spanish American War, the "Antonio Lopez" was attempting to sneak artillery and supplies for the Spanish troops at El Morro. She was intercepted by the “U.S.S. Yosemite” and grounded on an off shore reef while trying to escape. The “USS New Orleans” grounded the gunrunner on a reef near the approaches to the harbor of San Juan. A daring salvage operation, however, turned the last voyage of the “Antonio Lopez” from failure to success. The guns and gunpowder were saved and used to fortify the City of San Juan thus averting a planned American attack. Join the dive team as they work with the chief marine archaeologist of Puerto Rico Juan Vera Vega to unravel the full story of this amazing wreck. But also see the team in one of their most dangerous dives trying to fight 25-foot waves and deadly currents |
