“The Pilot” - Guysborough County, Halifax, (47 min.)
The pilot-production of the series deals with three shipwrecks, which sunk off the coast of Nova Scotia during the past two hundred years. The first wreck is the bark “Saladine”. On its deck planks took place, one of the bloodiest mutinies in the history of Canada. Out of greed the crew killed the Captain and his son with axes and knives. The second story looks into the mystery surrounding the loss of the steamer “Finchley”, which some historians believe was sunk by shore-pirates. Shore pirates have been very common on these coastlines and many ships run onto the treacherous cliffs of Nova Scotia, lured into death by false shore fires. W.W.II set the stage for the tragic sinking of the merchant vessel “British Freedom”. It was torpedoed by U-1232 just outside Halifax harbour in 1945. Enter the Canadian Submarine SDL and descend with Rick Haupt to a shipwreck, which still has one unexploded depth charge somewhere on board.
OD's newest filming expedition will be the search for several Spanish Galleons from the late 16th Century, a timeframe in which „Sir Francis Drake" hunted Spanish ships in the "New World". The documentary will be filmed in high-definition on locations in the southern Caribbean. More about this highly technical underwater adventure on our next update.
